Watch Wynonna Judd Nail Two of Patsy Cline’s Most Iconic Songs
“It does not get any better than this,” Wynonna Judd tells the audience just before she launches into the song “Crazy” in a new Patsy Cline tribute concert coming soon to PBS.
The sad love song was written by then-up-and-comer Willie Nelson and immortalized by Patsy when she made it her own in 1961, less than two years before her untimely death at age 30. Done right, the song wraps you in its resonance. Wynonna is correct—it really is the best.
You can see Wynonna’s of performance of “Crazy” and “Sweet Dreams,” another of Patsy’s classics, in the star-studded concert Patsy Cline: Walkin’ After Midnight. Presented by the long-running series Great Performances, it premieres Friday, November 22, at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings), as well as on pbs.org and the PBS App.
Altogether, 20 solo and group artists step up to the mic during the concert filmed at the historic Ryman Auditorium, former home of the Grand Ole Opry and Patsy’s home stage in Nashville. Many in the lineup are country artists (Mickey Guyton, Ashley McBryde, Reyna Roberts, Tigirlily Gold), but the show also touts pop, rock (Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo!), gospel (Natalie Grant), and bluegrass artists, all influenced by Patsy’s legacy.
Broadway star and actress Kristin Chenoweth, who recalls growing up in Oklahoma and hearing Patsy’s voice for the first time, sings “I Fall To Pieces”, while Kellie Pickler makes an emotional return to the stage to perform “The Woman I Am,” a song Kellie wrote with her late husband that references Patsy in the lyrics.
Beverly D’Angelo and Mandy Barnett, who have both portrayed Patsy (in the 1980 movie Coal Miner's Daughter and in the musical Always… Patsy Cline, respectively), also take the stage. In between songs, snippets of archival interviews with Patsy’s husband, Charlie Dick, and fellow artists and friends, including Loretta Lynn, Dottie West, Roy Clark, and Owen Bradley, paint a broader picture of the singer’s life.
From filmmaker Barbara Hall, who has also created films on the country music legends Charley Pride, Loretta Lynn, Wynonna, and more, this concert is one not to miss for longtime fans of Patsy Cline and new listeners too. Watch the premiere on Friday and perhaps stream it later with family gathered for the holidays to help inspire the next generation of fans. That would make Patsy’s daughter, Julie Fudge, a co-executive producer on the project who is dedicated to preserving her mom’s legacy, very happy.
