WATCH: ‘Pod Save America’ Host Jon Lovett Joins The Daily Beast Podcast
On this week’s The Daily Beast Podcast, co-hosts Joanna Coles and comedian Samantha Bee unpacked inauguration weekend—a soggy sequin-fest that involved Joanna popping her “rain poncho cherry.”
In D.C. for the occasion, Coles set the scene: Sleet pouring down, a dearth of rideshare options—and Kellyanne Conway snagging “the last pedal cab,” leaving her to trudge through the snow in her rain boots. Bee’s most pressing question was, of course, about Conway’s ensemble: “Was she wearing her Paddington Bear poncho?”
Coles, however, saved her most pointed fashion analysis for Melania Trump’s inauguration gown, describing it as a “redacted document.”
“It looked like she was censoring her body parts from Trump—either subversive or deeply unconscious,” Coles added. Bee chimed in with her own theory: “I thought the hat was a strategic move to keep Trump away from her face—maybe the brim had razorblades!”
In other sharp analysis, podcast guest Jon Lovett addressed the cultural climate that led to inauguration day, and the growing tensions therein: “This is about noise and people being subjected to liberals they find annoying,” he said. “I find a lot of those liberals annoying too. But it’s not going to lead me to elect Donald Trump over it.”
On the future of the Democratic Party, Lovett emphasized the need for bold leadership. “We’ve made no new figures with Obama’s popularity—no one with a coalition that broad.” He urged Democrats to seize the moment: “The Etch-a-Sketch is shaken... Tell your story, make your case. We don’t know what’s going to work, but now’s the time to try.”
