The Project's Waleed Aly has been cruelly targeted by trolls online for his Gold Logie nomination, with Channel 10 forced to step in.

Waleed Aly is one of seven nominated for Most Popular Personality on Australian TV at the 2019 Logie Awards set to take place on Sunday.

“Vote for Waleed for all his hard work on The Project,” the network shared across their social media accounts on Wednesday.

But while many fans shared their support for the host, a host of negative and even abusive comments started flooding the network’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

Abusive comments not okay

“Never, he needs sacking not a gold,” one person commented on Instagram.

“Stopped watching The Project because of him,” another wrote on Facebook.

“Everyone agrees overwhelmingly that it is a NO,” was another response.

The post now has over 4.5K comments, but Channel 10’s social media team was forced to step in and shared its community guidelines and a note asking people to be ‘kind’ and ‘respectful’.

“At 10, we’re about celebrating Australian TV talent. Please consider your comments before you post them,” the message read. “Be kind. Be respectful.”

Sadly it appeared to fall on deaf ears with some not responding well to the intervention.

“If you want proper feedback of your cast and presenters, do not tell people what they can and can’t post,” one person wrote.

Already a Gold Logie winner

Waleed Aly was crowned the Gold Logie winner back in 2016 and delivered a moving speech addressing diversity as he accepted the award on stage.

"There have been a lot of people in the last week or two who've made it really, really clear to me that me being here really mattered to them," Waleed said during his 11-minute speech.

"It matters to them for a particular reason and that reason was brought home shudderingly not so long ago when someone, who is in this room - I'm not going to use their name that they use in the industry - came up to me and said, 'I really hope you win. My name is Mustafa, but I can't use that name because I won't get a job'.

"He's here tonight and it matters to people like that, that I'm here. I know it's not because of me. To Dimitri and Mustafa, and everyone else with an unpronounceable name, like, I don't know, Waleed - I just really want to say something.

"I'm incredibly humbled that you would invest in me in that way, but I'm also incredibly saddened because you deserve more numerous and worthy avatars than that.”
