This Viral Recipe is the Most Fun You Can Have With a Watermelon

It’s no big surprise that watermelon recipes are everywhere, but if you’re tired of making watermelon salads, maybe it’s time to try a new way to enjoy watermelon. A viral TikTok trend is probably the most fun you can have with the delicious summertime fruit, and we’re totally here for it!

There are many variations on this viral watermelon Jell-O salad, but we're partial to the one shared by content creator My Nguyen of @myhealthydish shared an idea to her Instagram page and it looks absolutely delicious! It’s easy, fun, and adds a fun twist to the same old watermelon recipes.

To make the fun dessert, Nguyen cut a section off of the top of a watermelon and then hollowed out the rest of the fruit, creating a bowl for the gelatin.

She pureed the watermelon flesh, then double strained the juice to get the pulp out. She then combined two cups of watermelon juice with one cup of water and four packets of plain gelatin to create a firmer gelatin that would cut neatly.

She put the hollowed out watermelon in a small mixing bowl so it would stand up straight, then put grapes, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries inside the hollowed-out fruit. Next, she ladled the gelatin mixture on top, put the watermelon "lid" back on and chilled the fruit overnight.

When the gelatin was set, she removed the watermelon from the fridge and sliced it in half, revealing the colorful fruit suspended in the gelatin. She then cut it into wedges just as you would watermelon.

In the comments to her video, people told her you could also add alcohol to the gelatin mixture to create watermelon Jell-O shots, and others suggested using coconut water instead of watermelon juice to give the Jello more of a tropical vibe. Other versions we've seen online use different kinds of fruit and/or flavored Jell-O packets, so there's plenty of room to play around with this cool treat to make it your own.  

No matter how you make it, we think this Jell-O watermelon is one of those fun and easy recipes that would be fun to make with kids and is sure to be a showstopper at your next summer barbecue.
