The hosts of The View had a lot to say on Friday about Travis Kelce’s declaration that it will be a “great honor” to have Donald Trump attend the Super Bowl this Sunday.

Whoopi Goldberg made a rare Friday appearance at the show’s table, where she asked the other hosts if they thought Kelce “should have defended” his pop star girlfriend Taylor Swift by throwing shade at the president, given Trump’s online rant about the star months ago, during which he wrote his infamous “I hate Taylor Swift” Truth Social post.

Sunny Hostin said that not picking a fight with the president was a smart move. “He was being a diplomat and I think he did the right thing by not giving in to the madness,” she remarked.

“I thought it was pure, totally classy—a diplomatic answer, and it’s his big day to be playing,” Alyssa Farah Griffin added, saying that “the presidency is bigger than any one person” and Kelce would have said the same whether it was “Joe Biden, Obama, George Bush.”

Even Trump’s biggest hater on the show, Ana Navarro, agreed, saying, “Imagine, though, if he had said something against Trump, it would be taken out on his team, and all the hate that the team would receive as we’re heading into the Super Bowl.”

Kelce surprised some fans when he replied to a question about Trump attending the big game on Sunday with nothing but kind words. “That’s awesome. It’s a great honor,” Kelce told reporters. “I think you know, no matter who the president is, I know I’m excited because it’s the biggest game of my life, you know, and having the president there—it’s the best country in the world—and that’s pretty cool.”

While some, like the View hosts, saw it as the “classy” way to respond despite the beef between his girlfriend and the president, others on social media criticized his laissez-faire attitude toward Trump’s policies and overhauls since he took office—or as confirmation that he had supported Trump for president all along. Kelce has never disclosed his political leanings, even after Swift endorsed Harris ahead of the November election.

“Trump ripping apart the foundations of our country but [Chiefs quarterback] Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce excited to throw a ball in front of him for a couple hours,” wrote one user. Another joked that Kelce may as well have said “It’s an honor to play in front of Hitler,” while some fans pointed to Kelce’s having knelt in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick being “registered as a Democrat” as evidence his response was nothing more than diplomacy.

Trump reciprocated the love on Friday, however, calling him “the absolute best tight end in football” in a Truth Social post.

The View hosts were unanimous that Kelce had done the “right thing” by not starting a war of words with Trump. Goldberg seemed relieved that every host was in agreement, as she concluded the segment, “So the kid did well I think.”
