Keke Palmer and UsherWhat happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas.
Keke Palmer learned that lesson the hard way in 2023, when she went viral for dancing with Usher at his Las Vegas residency. The moment became especially explosive when Palmer's then-boyfriend weighed in, shaming her for wearing a black bodysuit and sheer dress. But now, with the relationship in the rearview mirror, Palmer is ready to crack jokes about the infamous concert moment.
“We caused some ruckus in my relationship,” Palmer said coyly, while welcoming Usher to the latest episode of her Baby, This is Keke Palmer podcast.
But the "Confessions" singer was quick to deflect the blame, joking, "Whoa hold on, did we cause some ruckus in your relationship?"

With Palmer laughing in the background, he continued, "Did I have anything to do with what was going on in your home? Did I send you that dress? I can not be responsible for how people choose to react to my experience as an entertainer. I am not deliberately trying to do anything that's gonna rock anybody's home."

He agreed, "I'm usher-ing right now. This is what I actually say to myself in the mirror, every time I go out there before I hit the stage, I say, 'I am not here to break up your home. I am here to entertain you, my love.'"

Back in July 2023, a clip of Usher serenading the Nope actress — who played into the performance, by singing and dancing along — made waves on social media when her partner and the father of her child, Darius Jackson, criticized her dress. "It's the outfit tho.. you a mom," he wrote on X.
Jackson was subsequently slammed on social media and defended himself with a followup post, writing, "We live in a generation where a man of the family doesn't want the wife & mother to his kids to showcase booty cheeks to please others & he gets told how much of a hater he is. This is my family & my representation. I have standards & morals to what I believe."
The actress, singer, and burgeoning mogul split from Jackson within a month, and has since described their relationship as having a "toxic dynamic." In 2024, Palmer was granted a domestic violence restraining order against Jackson, which claimed that he physically abused her multiple times during their two-year relationship.
Reflecting on the social media frenzy surrounding the situation, Usher said, “I don’t want to take any responsibility for breaking everybody’s home up, but that wasn’t the purpose and point. It was for you to have a good time with your girls."

Towards the end of their conversation, Palmer returned to the subject to jokingly shut down the rumors that Usher ended her relationship, "No guys, it's not Usher. People have problems. Relationships have up and downs. If Usher ends up being there, it’s just coincidence," she said, prompting the Grammy-winner to burst into laughter.

Usher and Palmer's friendship obviously thrived in the aftermath. Within a month of the drama emerging, they teamed up for the music video of Usher's track, "Boyfriend," in which he tauntingly sings, "Somebody said that your boyfriend is lookin' for me."
Reflecting on his decision to collaborate with Palmer on the video, the "U Got It Bad Singer" shared, "I know it was a hot moment for you and I was like, ‘You know what? When life feeds you lemons, you make lemonade. I think that this could be something positive and actually just shine a little bit of fun on it.'"
He added that it had the benefit of taking the mind off of "all the rumors. "Just have a good time, don’t focus on the drama," he said.
Palmer has previously expressed shock over the way the Vegas concert moment exploded, telling PEOPLE in October, "I was just at a concert, doing what I do as an entertainer, creating a fun moment. How it became a storyline that me and Usher are in love, I don’t know.”
As for her relationship with Jackson, she shared that their relationship is in a better place, after amicably settling on a joint custody agreement for their son, Leo.
"I wish I could say he was terrible the entire time or that I was... but it wasn’t that black-and-white,” she said. “I didn’t want my son to think his father is a monster, because I don’t."
