'Top on wrong?': Confusing bikini trend leaves onlookers baffled

She’s the Instagram star who isn’t afraid to share the real and raw side of her skin-baring swimsuit pics but in her one of her photos this year, Rianne Meijer turned heads for another reason.

While on holiday in Spain in July, the Amsterdam-based influencer showcased an unusual way of wearing her leopard print bikini top which left several of her 920k followers ‘so confused.’

Instead of tying the string bikini top the traditional way, Rianne opted to flip it upside down so the strap that would normally tie around her waist now went around her neck and vice versa.

The effect was something of an optical illusion that stirred up some opinions in the comments section of the post.

“I was so confused to see you wearing top this way,” admitted one follower.

“Honestly thought it was a mistake,” remarked another.

Others gave the upside-down bikini trend their tick of approval.

“You look SO good. But is your top on wrong?” asked one.

“Smokin!!! Your top is upside down! Still rockin it!” praised another.

One follower piped up to say that Rianne’s swimsuit styling was totally en vogue on the Continent.

“Actually it is common in Europe to see people style the bikini top this way!” they wrote.

Rianne herself addressed the flurry of questions about her bikini top, adding that the upside-down trend was here to stay.

“Yess I turned it around!! It’s actually pretty cool hahah I love it, gonna wear all my bikinis like this from now on,” she replied.

The ‘upside-down’ bikini trend

Rianne isn’t the first to dabble in the upside-down bikini trend; it actually emerged way back in 2018 thanks to Italian model and blogger Valentina Fradegrada.

And it wouldn’t be a bona fide swimsuit statement until our very own bikini queen Tammy Hembrow rocked the look on her Instagram.
