'Ridiculous': UK star Maya Jama defends busty TV dress

UK TV presenter Maya Jama has hit back at critics after she was shamed for wearing a dress deemed ‘too revealing’ by online commentators.

The 26-year-old came under fire after she sported a low-cut summery gown while hosting Peter Crouch: Save Our Summer on the UK’s BBC.

At the time many argued the dress showed far too much cleavage for prime time, though the star slammed the suggestions, accusing critics of ‘hyper sexualising’ her body.

Now she says the real criticism started when she gained weight, and argues that people have only started trying to tell her what she can and cannot wear since she became more full-figured.

“I've always worn the same thing but when I was slimmer nobody commented on it and as soon as you have got a fuller figure people are shocked and insulted by your body, so I found it ridiculous,” the star told Mail Online.

“I've been wearing the same outfits, the same cut tops, my entire career and there was never really that many comments on it until I started putting on a bit of weight,” she continued.

The star sported the purple square-cut summer dress back in June that kicked off the controversy.

Some argued at the time that the presenter’s outfit was ‘too revealing’.

One woman said she was concerned the presenters bosom would ‘fall out’ on live TV., a comment that prompted Maya to speak out on Twitter at the time.

“Appreciate your concern I am able and allowed to dress how I please,” she wrote in response.

“If you feel uncomfortable by my boobs sitting in my dress that’s on you sis. We’re all fighting for equality and similar treatment to our male counterparts.”

She went on to implore the woman not to ‘let down the side’.

“Don’t let the side down by hyper sexualising my bod,” she concluded.

Now she says she prefers her body as it currently is, and says she chooses to do what makes her happy.

“It depends on each person, it's subjective,” she explained. “So I just do what makes me happy and in terms of my body, I prefer myself as fuller.”

Maya’s not the only UK presenter who has copped criticism over her outfit choices.

Amanda Holden criticised

Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden was forced to clap back earlier this month following complaints about her head-turning midnight blue gown that saw viewers demand she ‘cover up’.

The 49-year-old singer/actor’s sparkling frock featured a thigh-high split and a show-stopping plunging neckline that many fans at home thought put a little too much of her assets on display.

Amanda tackled the ‘nip slip’ backlash in a fiery Instagram Story post which slammed several outraged viewers’ comments.
