Troian Bellisario, Lori Loughlin play cops in exclusive first-look photos from “On Call”
"This definitely is not a typical procedural," co-showrunner Tim Walsh tells "Entertainment Weekly."
There's a new cop show on the block, and this one features a few familiar faces.
Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario is suiting up alongside The Good Doctor's Brandon Larracuente for On Call, Prime Video's newest cop series. Entertainment Weekly has an exclusive first look at the show, which follows Bellisario's veteran police officer as she trains Larracuente's rookie cop on patrol in Long Beach, Calif.
"The idea for this show is over four years old and it originated with thinking about how to make something that's old new again," co-showrunner Elliot Wolf tells EW. "Looking at the visual language of this show and the use of found footage, we really wanted to take a format, in the half-hour procedural, that you don't really see today and make it completely new again. That was the basic idea."

Co-showrunner Tim Walsh adds, "We never set out to reinvent the wheel. I don't think we ever felt we could reinvent the wheel. There's so many procedurals and cop shows out there, so we just said, 'Let's just make this our version.' The North Star for us was, 'Let's make it incredibly entertaining' and we just went from there."
Speaking of the series' shooting style, On Call utilizes a mixture of hand-held cameras, along with body-cam and dash-cam footage to give the viewers a more intimate understanding of what goes on during patrol. "The iPhone is arguably the most relatable lens in the world today," Wolf says. "So for us as storytellers, how do we provide a new viewing experience within a traditional medium? And it was taking the lenses that are familiar to me, to Tim, and to, I think most folks watching this show out in the real world, and then telling a great story through those lenses."
With the 30-minute time limit, the episodes are able to take a slightly different approach to procedural storytelling. "What the half-hour format really allows you to do is never take your foot off the pedal," Wolf says. "This thing is adrenalized from start to finish."

Leading the charge is Bellisario and Larracuente, but they're surrounded by a supporting cast that includes Full House star Lori Loughlin and ER's Eriq La Salle, who's also an executive producer and director on the series.
"It was truly, for each of the roles, best performance gets the job," Wolf says when talking about casting Bellisario. "She did an amazing job on her initial audition, but man, once you put her and Brandon on screen together, it was clear as night and day. The chemistry there is unbelievable. It's the heart of the series."

As for Loughlin, Wolf says, "As soon as she signed onto the role, she was totally game. She wanted to do the research, she wanted to embody the character. She was honestly a joy to work with."
Together, the cast will take viewers inside the lives of the patrolmen as they respond to calls and just generally try to survive each day. "This definitely is not a typical procedural," Walsh says. "We don't start with a crime and solve it by the end of the episode. I'd say we're much more interested in the human interactions between our characters and the people they encounter every day. Some of it's fun, some of it's very scary, some of it's very heartwarming, but that's what we were most interested in is these human stories."
