Tom Holland had tough time keeping Robert Downey Jr. MCU return secret because he's known for 'ruining things'

"I strategically have done no press," said Holland while discussing RDJ's upcoming role as Doctor Doom.

Tom Holland may be Marvel’s reigning spoiler king, but there was one piece of franchise news he managed to keep to himself until it broke this summer.

The Spider-Man star recently revealed that he was one of the few people who knew that Robert Downey Jr. would be returning to the MCU to play Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday before the big announcement hit San Diego Comic Con in July.

"I've been speaking to [Downey] a lot, especially about him making his [MCU] return, which is super exciting," Holland said on the new episode of the Rich Roll podcast. "That was a tough secret to sit on because I have a reputation for ruining things, and I strategically have done no press."

The 28-year-old star has been known to drop spoilers during his time as the beloved web-slinger in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — so much so that Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo revealed that Holland didn't receive a full script for the movie — not that it stopped him from accidentally divulging Iron Man's death at the end of the film on The Graham Norton Show.

Holland's costars — including Benedict Cumberbatch, Zendaya, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Pom Klementieff — have also frequently intervened during interviews and panels to make sure Holland doesn't accidentally dish on anything too spicy.

While Downey trusted Holland to keep his secret, the same can't be said for his fellow Avengers. Jeremy Renner, who plays sharpshooter Hawkeye, previously told Us Weekly that he didn't hear a "peep" from Downey about his Doctor Doom casting in the original Avengers group chat, which is composed of the pair and their costars from the 2012 film, including Chris HemsworthChris EvansScarlett Johansson, and Mark Ruffalo.

"This son of a bitch didn't say anything to me," Renner said at the time. "And we're good friends!"

Holland kept up his spoiler streak by also revealing that a script has been written for a fourth installment of his Spider-Man film series.

"We have a creative and we have a pitch and a draft, which is excellent," he said while speaking on Rich Roll. "It needs work, but the writers are doing a great job. I read it three weeks ago and it really lit a fire in me. Zendaya and I sat down and read it together and we at times were bouncing around the living room like, this is a real movie worthy of the fans' respect."

Holland noted, however, that he'd be interested in making the film only if it did justice to the fans and Peter Parker's story. "I want to make many more, but I want to do it for the right reasons," Holland said. "And now, sometimes I miss the day when getting the job was the win. I am navigating and figuring out what having that kind of power means and that responsibility. And I'm figuring it out."

He added, "I definitely don't want to just make a movie for the sake of it, because that's not what Spider-Man represents. So, yeah, it's a complicated one."
