Today tension: Georgie Gardner spills on ‘really frustrating’ year hosting with Karl Stefanovic

TV star Georgie Gardner has opened up about her time on Today, revealing why things didn’t work out for her on the morning show.

Georgie replaced Lisa Wilkinson as Karl Stefanovic’s co-host in 2018, however he was dumped by Nine just months later after a string of controversies in his personal life.

Deborah Knight stepped in to replace Karl however both she and Georgie were gone from the show in by 2019 to make way for Karl Stefanovic and Allison Langdon in 2020.

“Unfortunately things that were out of my control meant that it was a short-lived stint,” she said the It’s All Her podcast.

“I had a year hosting with Karl, which was a lot of fun. But it was also a period in his personal life where there was a lot going on. And there was a lot of noise.

“We were never sort of able to get traction because there was always so much speculation about his private life. It was really tough for him. And it was tough for us as a duo."

She said it was ‘really frustrating’ for the both of them because contrary to reports at the time, they got on ‘really well’.

“It was a great chemistry actually,” she said.

“All the white noise just took over, we never seemed to be able to cancel that out.

“Anyway, one thing led to another, he was moved off the show. In fact, they moved everyone off, which was very, very tricky for me. I offered to go as well but they decided to build another team.”

That team included Deborah Knight, Brooke Boney Tony Jones and Tom Steinfort.

“It got to a point where I could see it just wasn’t going to work. So I just gracefully exited stage left and just continued on with my news, which is what I’m still doing today."

Karl Stefanovic and Allison Langdon went on to successfully host the show together for two years before Ally took over from Tracey Grimshaw as the host of A Current Affair.

Journalist Sarah Abo was brought in to co-host with Karl and the pair have been at the helm of the show ever since.
