Julie Bishop takes a swipe at Karl Stefanovic on Today

Former Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop has taken a subtle swipe at Karl Stefanovic’s ‘rollercoaster’ year, which saw the journalist dumped and then reinstated as Today show host.

Julie appeared on the Today show on Monday morning to talk about the ongoing bushfire crisis around Australia, when she joked about how long it had been since the last time Karl had interviewed her.

“Karl, it’s been quite a rollercoaster,” Julie said, before adding, “..for both of us, since the last time you interviewed me probably 18 months ago.”

Clearly intrigued by the subtle dig, Karl’s new co-host Allison Langdon chimed in asking, “what’s happened?”

But Karl seemed less inclined to go into any details with Julie, who was a guest at his lavish wedding to Jasmine Yarborough in Mexico in 2018.

“Let’s not, there’s a lot of water, a lot of water under the bridge,” he said, before he smoothly transitioned into asking Julie how she was doing after her transition into a less public life.

Karl and Julie famously clashed back in August 2018, when she appeared on the program during the period where the Liberal party leadership was very much up in the air.

Julie delivered Karl a salty blow, after he asked her how it felt “talking to a man on death row”, referring to Malcolm Turnbull.

“Well, I am talking to you, Karl,” was her response, which at the time was applauded prompting many viewers to question his role as the host of the program. Just a few months later, Karl was famously axed from the popular breakfast program.

So many were then surprised when Julie made an appearance as a ‘close-friend’ at Karl and Jasmine’s wedding celebrations alongside other A-listers like Richard Wilkins, Montana Cox and Sylvia Jeffreys.

After a year away from the Today show, Karl Stefanovic returned with a bang this week.

The 45-year-old, who recently confirmed that he is expecting a child with his wife of one year, Jasmine Yarbrough, made his show debut two days earlier than expected with Allison, to cover the bushfire crisis.

Fans praised Karl for his Today show return, taking to Twitter to welcome the controversial host back.

“I've missed @karlstefanovic so much. He is the perfect person for this situation. He just has such a gentle way with people,” one person tweeted.

“Great to see Karl Stefanovic back on the Today Show,” another person said, while another tweeted: “How good is it to turn @TheTodayShow on this morning and see @karlstefanovic !!! Welcome back buddy.”
