Today hosts' bizarre interview leaves fans baffled: 'So awkward'

Karl Stefanovic and Ally Langdon have left fans baffled after appearing in a bizarre, 'awkward' interview held inside a lift, of all places.

The footage appears to have been captured at the KIIS FM studios in mid-May when the Today show hosts joined the Kyle & Jackie O Show for a chat.

However, it was several weeks later when the clip was shared on the radio show's Instagram account, and it's a cringeworthy watch.

Karl and Ally are seen being ushered into a lift by Kyle and Jackie O's 'intern' Pete, who promptly hands them both microphones.

"Are we singing a song? Is it a rap number?" Ally asks warily.

"No, no, we're doing a debrief...a chat...what was I saying?" Pete trails off causing Karl to start giggling.

'What is he on?'

Apparently clueless as to who they are, Pete asks if they're 'from the TV'. Despite the awkwardness levels skyrocketing, Ally politely introduces Karl and herself, as her co-host attempts to stifle his laughter.

"I don't know what the hell we're doing!" Ally laughs nervously as the lift doors ping open to reveal Kyle Sandilands. He enters as intern Pete declares he's 'very busy' and scurries out — but it doesn't get any less strange from there.

"What is he on? Whatever it is it's better than endone," Ally says of Pete.

She then asks Karl if he farted during their chat with Kyle and Jackie O and he looks sheepish. "Did you just do another one?" she accuses.

Naturally, Kyle pipes up to claim that his farts 'don't stink' — "not a drop!" — which is a totally appropriate statement when you're in an enclosed space with others.

'So chaotic'

Finally, the trio reaches their floor and can escape what was surely the longest lift ride of their lives.

The reaction from fans on social media was mixed, to say the least, with some finding it delightfully funny and others not so much.

"This is so chaotic," wrote the Today show's official Instagram account.

"What the f**k did I just watch?" wondered a follower.

"Awkward but hilarious!!!" added a second.

"This was just stupid, do better guys," remarked a third.

Whether you like 'em or loathe 'em, it seems as though we can expect more of these odd celebrity encounters as part of the station's 'Intern Pete's Lift Chat' series, which has already featured tense talks with musicians Amy Shark and Jack Vidgen.
