“Guys, I have some very big news for you this morning,” she began. “I have been offered a place at Oxford University later this year, which means I’ll be leaving the show after the Olympics.

“I don’t want to go into too much right now because there’ll be plenty of time for goodbyes and thank yous, but I just wanted to share that good/bad news with you all this morning.”

Brooke went on to share that it’s always been a dream of hers to study at an overseas university and now feels like the right time to take that step.

“I’m so grateful to come in here every day and I love you all so much, so it’s made the decision really difficult,” she added. “But it just means that you’ll all have to plan trips to the UK to come and visit me.”

Karl's sweet message to Brooke

The TV host admitted she felt like she was going to cry as her co-stars Karl Stefanovic, Sarah Abo and Alex Cullen applauded her in the studio.

“We are very, very proud of you. We know that you’ve wanted to do this for so long,” Karl said, while Sarah added, “It’s such a good opportunity”.

“My head’s spinning right now and my heart’s beating really fast,” Brooke remarked.

After joking that she will be able to check in on his 18-year-old daughter Willow, who recently moved to the UK to study at the London College of Fashion, Karl shared some encouraging words for Brooke.

“You know what, it’s a big deal to break away from something as secure as this,” he said. “To make your dreams come true and to take that step, to bite it off, is a testament to you as a person and says everything about you.”

What is Brooke studying at Oxford University?

Brooke shared on Today that she will be studying a Master of Public Policy when she attends Oxford University in September.

“I thought this is sort of what fits best with my journalistic career thus far,” she explained. “I thought if I don’t do this now, then I’m probably never going to. I am at that age where if I leave now and go and study and come back, I’ll still only be 38.”

Brooke joined Today in 2019 as an entertainment presenter before becoming the show’s news presenter in January 2023. Before this, she worked as a political correspondent for NITV and was the newsreader on Triple J from 2016 to 2018.

She also graduated from the University of Technology Sydney with a Bachelor of Communication (Journalism) in 2014.
