'Hidden meaning' behind mum's hairdo sparks fierce debate
TikTok is clearly dominated by Gen Z, giving anyone older than 26 an insight into what makes them tick, what’s on trend, and more importantly, what apparently is not.
As one mum recently discovered, a once popular and simple hair style - the side part - is in fact now considered to be a sign that you are ‘old’.
Chantalle Stott shared a clip in which she explained having seen many references to the side part being disliked by Gen Z, so she decided to ask her daughter for confirmation.
“I turned to my 21-year-old daughter and said, 'Is the side part just for old people? Is that why you part your hair in the middle?” she asked.
And the response: “And she says to me, 'Yeah, Mum. Not to be rude, but a side part's kind of the equivalent to an old man combover'.”
“Just take a moment to absorb that,” she continued.
“Yeah, she said that.”

Of course the revelation left some people speechless, with many taking to social media to share their thoughts.
“Great. Quarter life crisis incoming,” one person said.
“I learned on TikTok today that I have to get rid of my side part, skinny jeans and 😂 emoji or I’m old,” another mused.
“Get a Tiktok they said. It'll be fun they said. Now here I am feeling old for my side part and skinny jeans,” another person wrote.
While another woman went as far as revealing in her own TikTok that she “forces a middle part every day” so Gen Z “don’t think I’m old”.
