This Kmart fan upcycle will brighten any room: 'Looks fantastic'

Aussies love a good home decor hack, but it can be difficult to come up with something new and inventive.

One mum did just that, sharing it on a Facebook group page.

"I jazzed up my Anko chrome fan with a bit of paint," Penny wrote on the Kmart Home Decor and Hacks Australia page.

"A bit of paint' and a whole lot of artistic talent!! Looks fantastic - well done," one person commented.

"Absolutely amazing idea and how beautiful, you've done an amazing job," another added.

Penny clarified in the comment section that it wasn't difficult, "just very time consuming".

"But I love doing tedious things," she said.

"I am very crafty and always look for different things to do.

"I currently paint quite a lot.

"I saw my old fan sitting there and thought how I could paint it and make it look more appealing," she told Yahoo! Lifestyle.

Mandala painting is relatively new for Penny after an operation forced her to give up crochet.

"My main thing for many years was crochet, until I had to have double hand surgery," she revealed.

"I had my right hand operated on first in April 2020.

"I couldn’t stand not doing anything, so I started to teach myself to paint with my non-dominant left hand, starting with a dot art/mandala.

"In October 2020 I had my surgery on my left hand, so I started painting with my right hand.

"I also love dot art, so I just started painting and that is what I came up with."

She hasn't stopped at one fan, however!

"I have made three so far, just for myself and family," Penny said.

Penny's process explained

The married mum of two shares her process for those who want to give it a go.

"I used acrylic paint, ECR base prep, brushes, mandala dotting tools and topcoat," she revealed to Yahoo!

"I prepared the base with ECR base prep, then painted a coat of acrylic over the top, then I just started dotting with the acrylic paint freehand.

"My overactive mind and imagination came up with the idea, I guess," she added modestly.

And with 1400 likes and more than 130 comments, other DIYers and home decor fans think it's a great hack.

"Love it. You should start a business with your idea," one commented.

"Wow, you could make some serious money doing and selling fans," another agreed.

"Clever, I would not have thought to do that," a third admitted.

Australia comes knocking

"I have started selling my paintings all over Australia – I just can’t believe people like my stuff," Penny admitted.

Although she works full-time, she has opened an Etsy store, PennyMarieCrafts, to sell her art.

"I am so happy I started painting, I just love it," she added.
