I must confess, I was never very good at maths. To be honest, I prefer subjects that have a few more shades of grey (and I’m not referring to the book, although that certainly would have made for an interesting English literature class). I am drawn to subjects whereby if you argue a point convincingly enough, you can still get a high mark, even if you're wrong.
So I was quite surprised when I found myself drawn to fashion pieces that have a very geometric, dare I say, mathematic feel. It seems even the algebra adverse can appreciate a good precision print, as long as we're not marked on it. Which is just as well, as they are the hottest print this season.
So how do you wear the geometric trend without looking like an unsolved math equation? No problem, I’ve done the homework for you.
If you want to: Highlight curves for a night out.
If you’re feeling like a dash of Kim K va va voom, pick a body hugging dress with lines that trace over your curves. The eye will be drawn to the hourglass shape, the darker belt will make a small waist look even teenier and the lines under the bust will make breast appear perkier. Warning: Only attempt if you are ready for a LOT of male attention.
Style tip: Be sure to keep the hemline at knee length or just above knee length to elongate the body and add a much needed touch of class to this sexy look.
If you want to: Flatter curves for a black tie event.
Blake Lively knows a thing or two about making the most of what she's got. At the recent premier of Savages, she wowed the crowd in a geometric gown by Zuhair Murad that uses lines to control curves and create a flawless shape. The curved lines at the bust create shape, the darker lines around the waist create the illusion of a minuscule torso, while the angled lines below the hips draw the eye down elongate ad narrowing the upper leg area.
Style tip: A patterned dress makes a big statement, so keep accessories to a minimum. Opt for black or nude shoes and a solid-colored clutch.
If you want to: Spice up your work wardrobe.
Bored with little black dresses? Us too! While finding the balance between office appropriate and fashion forward can be tricky, this trend lends itself perfectly to classically tailored pieces. Pick a versatile basic like this knee length shift dress like my one from Calvin Klein or even a blouse or pencil skirt and take it from boring to brilliant by adding a modern geometric print.
Style tip: For the office make sure you don't overdo the look, so team it with a single piece of jewelry and fuss-free hair.
If you want to: Look edgy at any age.
From young Hollywood starlet Chloe Moretz to fashion Grand Dame, Anna Wintour, anyone can look youthful, edgy AND age appropriate by adding a strong, controlled geometric print to a colourful dress of jacket. The structured lines and sharp angles instantly add backbone and sophistication to the look.
Style tip: For summer wear with strappy sandals and understated accessories, for a chic winter look team with a leather biker jacket and boots.
