The Project's Kate Langbroek furious over cancellation of iconic Aussie item

She joked that dentists will be sad to know they have been discontinued, telling the panel, "How am I going to lose my fillings now? Dentists will be protesting this!"

"I will buy you some Minties. That will get the job done," her co-host Sam Taunton joked.

Kate added, "You can't learn the trivia because the writing is so little and they pick people from 1848."

Fans were also quick to slam the cancellation, with one user writing, "Why? Did some snowflake complain?"

"WTF!" another added.

"They can't do that...they are iconic," a third said.

"The only good thing about Fantales was the trivia and the answer was always either Hugh Jackman or Kylie Minogue," someone else added.

"I lost my first tooth eating these!" another Twitter user said.

Others described it as "devastating", with some saying their "childhood memories [are] gone".

Speaking about the cancellation, Nestlé Oceania Confectionery General Manager Andrew Lawrey said in a statement: "We know our decision to stop making Fantales will be sad news for many people."

"Many of us grew up with Fantales and have fond memories of them. Despite the sense of nostalgia Fantales evoke, unfortunately people simply aren't buying them as often as they used to."

The cancellation comes due to the fact the equipment used to make them requires significant investment.

"It's become increasingly difficult to get the parts we need to maintain it, and with declining sales, replacing it isn't viable," he added.

Fantales have almost been around for 100 years, after first being created in 1930, when people first began flocking to the cinema during the Golden age of Hollywood.

This is also why the sets have 'fan tales' of different stars on their wrappers.

The last Fantales production run will be in mid-July.
