Taylor Swift, South African singer Tyla win big at MTV EMAs

Host Rita Ora also used the Manchester-set ceremony to remember late One Direction star Liam Payne.

Taylor Swift may have said “So Long, London” on her most recent album, but Manchester welcomed her back with open arms on Sunday.

Swift’s global domination continued at the 2024 MTV EMAs as the reigning pop deity took home the awards for Best Artist, Best Live Act, Best U.S. Act, and Best Video for her collaboration with Post Malone on “Fortnight.” The song appeared on 2024’s The Tortured Poet’s Department, Swift’s 11th studio album.

Swift thanked her fans via video message, as she’s about to embark on the Canadian stretch of Eras Tour.

EMAs host Rita Ora used the ceremony to honor former One Direction star Liam Payne. Ora was one of Payne’s friends and collaborators before his death last month after a fall from a Buenos Aires balcony.

“Liam Payne was one of the kindest people I knew,” the British singer said in an emotional moment. “He had the biggest heart and he left such a mark on this world.”

The other big winner of the night was Tyla, the South African singer famous for her work in pop and amapiano, a South African genre that mixes kwaito and house music. She took home the awards for Best R&B, Best African Act, and Best Afrobeats.

K Pop star LISA won the awards for Best Fans and for Best Collaboration for her work with Rosalía on "New Woman."
