'Surprising' $16.99 Aldi budget buy rivals $80 version

We all know Aldi loves to keep shoppers coming back with famous budget buys in categories as varied as ski gear and kitchen utensils.

What no one expected, however, was for the discount supermarket to dip its toes into fashun, dahling – but that's exactly what they've done.

Shoppers were surprised, and delighted, when one thrifty lady took to Facebook to share a very chic summer dress she picked up in the Special Buys aisle and loved so much, she got it in three colours!

Shared to a fan page, Aussie shopper Fiona showed off the three distinct looks in a series of mirror selfies, writing she was just as surprised and delighted as everyone else with the unexpected purchases.

"Not your usual post but I thought I’d share," she wrote. "I’ve never bought Aldi clothes before but was super impressed by the quality, fit oh and price!"

"When you find a bargain dress and buy it in every colour!" she joked. " Who would have thought Aldi!"

In the photos, Fiona models the dress in a deep navy, a flattering sky blue and a khaki green.

Best of all? Each dress set her back just $16.99, bringing her wardrobe overhaul to a grand total of $51.

Fiona tells Yahoo Lifestyle while she usually shops at pricier Aussie stores like Seed or Country Road, she couldn't go past this buy which she says matches the quality of her higher-priced items.

"I’d normally shop at places like Seed, Country Road, [or] Decjuba," she says. "Price-wise [this dress] is excellent value and quality matches too."

The dresses garnered plenty of attention from other fashionistas, dozens of whom flooded the comments with their admiration.

"I want it!" one woman wrote.

"The khaki one looks great with those boots," another agreed.

"Oh wow,' a third wrote. "I’m quite impressed."

Others were gobsmacked that the fashionable looks came from Aldi.

"Absolutely gorgeous!!!" one woman wrote. "I am super surprised."

Others reported a super similar dress was on sale at Aussie retailers like Just Jeans... for about four times the price.

"I bought this exact dress in the denim colour at just jeans for about $70," one frustrated shopper wrote. "To see these I was spewing.. should have waited."

Fiona says it's not just Facebook users who rushed to get their hands on the Aldi buy, her own friends made a beeline from her closet to their nearest Aldi stores.

"I have had friends who went straight away to get the same dress when they asked where I got it," she says.

It's not the first time a super cheap item has become a sensation among fashion lovers on a budget.

Last week, a pair of $8 Kmart slides sparked a flurry of comments online after a curious shopper put a call out for some honest reviews.

Taking to a Kmart-themed Facebook group, the user asked if owners of the black 'double band slides' — which bear a resemblance to a $150+ style by Birkenstock— have experienced any problems while wearing them such as blisters.

They received a flood of responses, with many singing the cheap-and-cheerful slip-on shoes' praises, while others argued that investing in the real deal for longevity and comfort.
