Sunrise star Sam Mac announces engagement: 'There were tears'

Sunrise star Sam Mac has announced his engagement to his partner Rebecca James, taking to Instagram to share the good news.

Calling it his secret 2023 resolution to propose, Sam left it down to the wire, popping the question just before 2024 hit.

"Ladies & gentlemen, my fiancée!" he captioned the post.

"My secret 2023 New Year’s resolution was to propose to my darling Rebecca sometime this year….So I guess this is what you’d call a 'buzzer beater,'" he continued.

"She’s calm, strong and unintentionally funny. She’s super smart and a genuine knockout beauty. She makes me a better man.

"Earlier this morning in front of her parents & brother… I told her I’m in love with every version of her and asked her to be mine forever, she said yes.

"There were tears, laughter & a Ghillie suit…but that’s a story for another day."

'Talk about cutting it fine'

Fans, friends, and familiar faces were quick to congratulate the happy pair.

"YAY. Incredible news. Congratulations lovebirds," Bachelor and SAS Australia star Anna Heinrich said.

"Congratulations @sammacinsta wishing you both all the happiness in life," former Big Brother winner Reggie Bird commented.

"A successful proposal and an accurate sunny weather forecast. Could this be peak life @sammacinsta?! Congrats, you guys," Dr Chris Brown wrote.

"Well, that’s just the best. Margot will be the cutest flower girl. Congrats," The Morning Show host Kylie Gillies said, while Sunrise host Nat Barr also sent her congratulations. "Huge congrats you two! Amazing news. (And talk about cutting it fine Sam.. almost a photo finish)," Nat wrote.

Rebecca gave birth to the couple's first child in September 2022, a girl named Margot. Sam announced in November 2023 he was taking a break from Sunrise to take parental leave, so Rebecca could return to work.

"She’s been thinking about it for the past few months and now that Margot is over a year old she’s ready to properly get back into the workforce," Sam told 7Life of the decision. "It’s my turn to be getting Margot up, feed her and basically becoming her personal assistant/servant."

He added, "It's been a long time coming."
