Sunrise set for major change: 'Marks a new beginning'

The Channel Seven breakfast show will undergo a huge change.

After nearly two decades in its iconic Martin Place location, Sunrise will be moving to South Eveleigh, with fans no longer able to see the show filming from the street.

The breakfast show's move will go ahead in the coming weeks, with 7NEWS anchor Mark Ferguson broadcasting his first show from the new studios on Monday night.

Sunrise, Weekend Sunrise and The Morning Show will all broadcast from the new studios.

Some of the Seven team is already working out of the new office, with 7NEWS.com.au and 7NEWS Spotlight already making the transition.

The move is the first time in 40 years that Seven’s entire Sydney operation is “under one roof” according to chief executive James Warburton.

“Martin Place has served as an exceptional home for us but as we aim to unite even more Australians across our much-loved news and public affairs content, our transition to the purpose-built, state-of-the-art studio space in South Eveleigh is a pivotal move.

7NEWS’s relocation to South Eveleigh marks the start of this exciting phase and we look forward to Sunrise and The Morning Show joining our cutting-edge, new location soon.”

The move “marks a new beginning” according to network director of news and public affairs Craig McPherson.

“Since first turning the lights on at Martin Place on August 30, 2004, Seven’s News and Public Affairs team has broadcast a mammoth 70,000 hours of television from the Martin Place studio,” Mr McPherson said.

“Hundreds of careers started there, as did programs. Not all lasted but the constant demand for the content never wavered. It was a wonderful workplace for all of us, but it had served its time.”

New Sunrise host

The show's relocation news comes just weeks after Sunrise, David ‘Kochie’ Koch officially revealed that Matt Shirvington would be replacing him on the Channel Seven breakfast show.

Speaking about his new role, Matt admitted he had “mixed emotions” about stepping into the top job.

“Just amazing, daunted, so excited, happy,” he detailed. “Cannot tell you the honour and privilege this is, Kochie, particularly. A huge job and an exciting job.”

Kochie gushed about his successor during the announcement and said Matt is “absolutely perfect” for the gig.

“You've been fantastic filling in every Friday, it’s been sensational. You are going to be the perfect fit,” he said. “What have you loved about doing Sunrise?”

“It’s such a family,” Matt replied. “It's a family show, it’s a mouthpiece for all Australians and their stories.

“And the thing I love the most is sitting on this couch and going from complete elation and excitement and happiness with some of the stories that you hear about to the heartbreak and the horror and the sadness and wiping a tear from your eye and moving on and it's just a phenomenal thing.”

In a statement from Seven, Matt acknowledged that this is “a huge life shift” that he couldn’t have done without the support of his wife Jess and their three children.
