Sophie Turner delivers more than just diamonds in Joan.

In a new trailer released on Aug. 20, obtained exclusively by Entertainment Weekly, the Game of Thrones alum, 28, takes on the role of a lifetime as Joan Hannington, one of Britain's most notorious diamond thieves and single mother, in the CW show.

Based on a true story, the six-part series will see Joan (Turner) in her 20s as a "fiery uncompromising and intoxicating character, who is not without her own deep scars and vulnerability," according to the show's official synopsis.

Despite being a "doting and loving young mother to four-year-old Kelly," Joan will find herself stuck in a "disastrous marriage to a violent thug." When he finally goes on the run, Joan "seizes the moment to leave her old life" and makes "heartbreaking decisions" in order to secure a better life for her and her daughter.

The trailer begins with a social worker asking, "So you've just been made homeless and you want to put your daughter in emergency care?"

As shots of Joan stroking her daughter's hair on a bus bench flash on screen, she tells the social worker that giving her daughter up wasn't a choice she wants to make.

"Is Kelly in danger?" the woman asks before Joan leaves the office in tears, but with ambition in her eyes.

With plans to get a job "to support us," Joan finds herself in a precarious situation when she seemingly seduces a sales clerk to get access to the store's jewels.

"I've got nothing, I need cash now," she sighs as the trailer transitions to scene of her finding a stash of cash in a drawer.

Eventually, Joan reaches new heights in her thievery and ups the ante when she swallows a diamond to successfully smuggle the precious stone.

"We need to clear some jewelry," her partner instructs, to which she replies, "You don't trust me?"

As she grapples with being a single mother and the implications behind her chosen profession, she confronts her partner, "Do you even want me to succeed?"

In a chilling final moment, he answers: "As a thief or as a mother?"

Joan marks Turner's first onscreen role in two years. The actress was filming the series when news about her divorce from her husband Joe Jonas went public in September 2023.

In her cover story for British Vogue's June 2024 issue, Turner elaborated more on the days that followed her split from the singer and called it "the worst few days of my life."

“I remember I was on set, I was contracted to be on set for another two weeks, so I couldn’t leave. My kids were in the States and I couldn’t get to them because I had to finish Joan. And all these articles started coming out," she recalled of the headlines that followed Jonas filing for divorce.

"I mean, it’s unfathomable the amount of people that will just make s--- up and put it up based on a picture," she continued. "A picture might tell a thousand words, but it’s not my story. It felt like I was watching a movie of my life that I hadn’t written, hadn’t produced, or starred in. It was shocking. I’m still in shock.”

The actress said that after "two weeks of me being in a rut," her lawyer reminded her what was at stake. "She reminded me that it was my children I was fighting for," Turner said.
