Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, celebrates 60th birthday with new portrait

A stylish new portrait of Duchess Sophie has been unveiled to celebrate her 60th birthday on Monday.

The picture was taken by London-based fashion photographer Christina Ebenezer at Prince Edward and Sophie's Bagshot Park residence earlier this month and features the Duchess of Edinburgh smiling happily, dressed in a black sweater, an ankle-length, white pleated skirt and nude heels, her hair long and loose. Additional photos were shared of Sophie outdoors wearing forest-green tailored pants, an earthy brown turtleneck and winter white fitted coat.

The Royal Family’s Instagram account also posted a clip reel of Sophie going about her official duties, greeting athletes and visiting a children's hospital.

"Wishing The Duchess of Edinburgh a very happy 60th birthday today!" the post read.

Sophie was drawn to Ebenezer’s creative direction after viewing the photographer’s portraits of Letitia Wright and Michaela Coel at the National Portrait Gallery and “wanted to support a rising female photographer,” per the Royal Family and Ebenezer’s Instagram posts.

“The Duchess wanted to collaborate and be captured in a different light for this new chapter of life. We had a very relaxed day taking these at her home – her and the team created a very welcoming atmosphere,” Ebenezer wrote, adding that her favorite part was working together on Sophie’s outfit choices.

Comments celebrating Sophie flooded the Royal Family’s Instagram post, praising the photographer for capturing her “fun and confident side.”

“She always looks so lovely and shows such a caring nature in all she is involved in,” another user wrote.

Sophie married Prince Edward in 1999, and the pair share two children, Lady Louise and James. Ahead of her 60th birthday, she has a “renewed excitement and commitment to her work around gender equality and looks forward to further embracing and championing this issue in the years to come,” the palace wrote.
