“SNL” Alum Vanessa Bayer Recalls How She 'Almost' Became Ted Danson's Daughter-in-Law After 'Coffee Date' with His Stepson Charlie
"I know he's married now and he has a beautiful, very talented wife," Bayer said of Ted Danson's stepson Charlie McDowell, who married Lily Collins in 2021
Vanessa Bayer is looking back at what could have been!
During an appearance on SiriusXM’s Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast, the Saturday Night Live alum, 43, told host Ted Danson: “ I have something that I wanted to tell you, which is that I was almost your daughter-in-law.”
When asked if she was referring to his stepson Charlie McDowell — a director and screenwriter who is the son of Danson’s wife Mary Steenburgen and actor Malcolm McDowell — the comedian shared, “Charlie and I went on a date.”
Bayer recalled how she and McDowell went on a “coffee date” at Cafe Gratitude, and added with a giggle, “I think it went well. There was some texting after.”
Danson then asked if that’s “a sign” for her generation, and she responded, “Of course, if there's no texting after then it's over.”
Bayer acknowledged that McDowell has since found love with wife Lily Collins, an actress who is also the daughter of Phil Collins and Jill Tavelman. The pair got engaged in 2020 and tied the knot a year later. She said, “I know he's married now and he has a beautiful, very talented wife, and I know her dad is very cool.”
However, the No Good Deed star couldn’t help but jokingly brag about her own father’s accomplishments.
“But my dad is cool, too. Not only does he have a packaging company, so just to suss out him versus Phil Collins,” she teased. “He has a package company... Let's say you buy a CD. And you open it and then you decide you don't want to keep it. You can't return it because you took out the shrink wrap. That's where my dad comes in.”
“That would have been your life, and also, my dad claims to be the first Todd. The first person to ever be named Todd,” she added.
"Do you think that's true, Vanessa?” the A Man on the Inside star asked and Bayer replied, “I support it blindly.”
Steenburgen, 71, recalled in an interview with E! News in October knowing that Collins, 35, could be the one for her son before the pair met.
"To be honest, I met my daughter-in-law before he did," she recalled at the time. "And I looked at her and thought, 'You would just be so amazing with my son.'"
“I met her in Jane Fonda's 80th birthday party, and I fell in love with her,” she added. “And then, when he told me who it was that he was dating, I zipped it!”
