There are few wedding taboos more contentious than an attempt to steal the bride’s spotlight, especially when the culprit is a member of her new family.

But one woman’s big day was almost derailed when her sister-in-law arrived at the nuptials in a near-white ballgown.

The fashion misstep was shared by the bride’s friend online who revealed the blunder took place at the couple’s ‘extravagant winter wedding in the Alps’.

“The dress code was black tie and there were no bridesmaids or groomsmen. Still a touchy subject so roast away!” the woman captioned her post.

A snap of the dressed-up family showed the women standing just one person apart, leading commenters to draw comparisons between the two ensembles.

“The bride is literally stunning and the SIL looks like she really tried hard and failed miserably at trying to upstage such a gorgeous bride,” wrote one defensive commenter.

“I'm going to agree with a lot of the others here, that the bride looks so amazing that it makes the SIL look that much more ridiculous,” quipped another.

A royal mistake?

Some were slightly more forgiving and quick to point out the dress may have actually been a hue of yellow, like Kate Middleton’s at Meghan Markle’s wedding, and therefore not an official fashion taboo.

Last year the Duchess of Cambridge rocked a cream-coloured dress and matching white coat to the Sussex’s nuptials but still managed to impressive fashion critics the world over.

However, this didn’t completely save the sister-in-law from criticism, with some still taking aim.

“It looks peach but still, yikes,” one woman wrote. “The bride’s dress is fantasy material, wow.”

Others agreed, noting the bride’s look was so show stopping she had nothing to worry about.

“The bride looks so beautiful no one could steal her thunder,” one user concluded.

“She is painfully gorgeous. The dress, the hair, the flowers, everything.”
