The Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed star's publicist Leslie Sloane shared the news in a statement to PEOPLE on Sunday night (Australian time).

Shannen was first diagnosed with cancer in 2015 and underwent eight rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, as well as a single mastectomy, before entering remission in 2017. However, she announced in February 2020 that her cancer had returned and was in stage four.

Shannen's final Instagram post

On June 26, Shannen shared her final Instagram post, which has taken on new meaning following her death. In the video, which was a clip from her Let's Be Clear podcast, the star speaks about feeling "hopeful" about her cancer battle.

"I have no idea how long I'm going to be on the chemo for, I have no idea if it's going to be three months, or if it's going to be six months or if after three months it's not working if we're going to change again," she shared. "Like, I don't really – that's not something that I can predict, it's not something my doctors can predict and it's scary, it's like a big wake up call."

She continued, "At the same time, I've gotta say, there is some positivity there, and the positivity is that, because my molecular structure of my cancer cells changed recently, it means that there's a lot more protocols for me to try. So, you know, for the first time in a couple months probably, I feel hopeful.

"Because there are so many more protocols now, whereas before I was hopeful, but I was still getting prepared."
