Selena Gomez tells critics to 'f--- off,' vulnerability is 'not shameful' after revealing she can't carry kids

"I truly believe that there is power in being vulnerable and telling people when you need help and when you want help."

Selena Gomez has no patience for people who have criticized her after she revealed that she cannot carry her own children.

The Only Murders in the Building star discussed the value of candor while speaking at a recent Women in Film event.

"I truly believe that there is power in being vulnerable and telling people when you need help and when you want help," she said. "That is not shameful. So yeah, I shared that I can't carry a child. Yeah, I shared that I have bipolar. F--- off! That's what my life is like."

Gomez first publicly reflected on her experience in a Vanity Fair profile this month. "I haven't ever said this, but I unfortunately can't carry my own children," she told the outlet. "I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby's in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while."

The actress was first diagnosed with lupus in 2013, and later received a kidney transplant in 2017 due to complications from the condition. She revealed that she'd been diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2020, stating in 2022 that the medication she takes for the disorder could affect her ability to carry children.

"I only wanna be an advocate for women, and that's why I share," Gomez said at the event. "That's why I like to be honest. Because everybody's going through something. I don't have it all put together."

The "Bad Liar" singer encouraged her fellow attendees to stand steadfast with compassion. "I'm me, and that's all I can be," she said. "So do not ever let anyone tell you that you are not a good person, that you aren't kind, that you won't treat people with respect. 'Cause that is not lame. That is so cool of you guys. And that is the fact. So screw anyone who tells you you're a victim — you're a survivor, in my book."
