'Visible undies' is the risqué new trend that's leaving wearers exposed

From super skimpy bikinis to festival outfits that are more skin than coverage, fashion has taken some unexpected turns this year, but a new look from bold online retailer Oh Polly may beat them all for sheer cheek - literally.

The popular UK brand has wowed shoppers with a new, almost entirely see-through dress that comes with built-in underwear - and shoppers are obsessed.

While the name of the see-through frock - the ‘sheer perfection sheer mesh underwired mini dress in white’ - has more letters than the garment has material, it’s flown off the shelves.

Featuring the titular underwired top section in completely sheer white fabric, the potential wearer’s modesty is preserved by a pair of high-waisted underwear that’s sewn into the figure-hugging mini skirt.

The dress - which comes in white and black - is advertised as being 84 cm in length, with an invisible zipper and adjustable straps, and sparked something of a frenzy when it was posted to Oh Polly’s Instagram as part of a giveaway back in September.

Fans of the dress took to the comments to praise the design.

“This is just amazing!” one keen shopper wrote, “I neeeeed this” another gushed, while a third wrote, “These dresses are so prettyyyyy.”

A growing trend

Oh Polly isn’t the only brand experimenting with visible undies, and it seems to be an evolution of sheer beachwear that showed off your bikini bottoms underneath.

However, bra or corset-style tops are still decidedly more popular on Instagram. We’ll see if visible undies can catch up.
