Janelle Monáe is celebrating her birthday the Janelle Monáe way.
That means, the “Q.U.E.E.N.” singer was on sun-drenched beach, Red Stripe in hand as she rang in her 39th birthday on Dec. 1.
“Ah it iz my birthdáe,” the star wrote on an Instagram post that featured a video that captured snippets of her celebration.
It began with kissy-faced, makeup-free Monáe in an outdoor tub, her short blonde hair smoothed into a sudsy mohawk.
Then, it cut to the “I Like That” star posing atop a lifeguard station wearing a black-and-white animal-print bikini and matching earrings and carrying binoculars. The camera zoomed in to reveal the star’s winged liner before cutting to a potentially NSFW shot of her sitting with her legs open (with her hands covering her private parts), followed slow-mo clip of her strutting along on the beach and sitting on a picnic table.

Monáe had not one but two celebrations to mark the occasion. In one Instagram story, the actress wore an LBD with a pleated skirt, black boots with white laces that tied up her ankle, plus a black-and-white hat and the same earrings she sported at the beach. The “Make Me Feel” singer danced as she blew out the candles.
In another video, the artist wore a long black dress with floral appliqués along the skirt. She accessorized the look with long red earrings and a matching heart-shaped purse.
The star is as known for turning heads with her red carpet style as she is for making fans do a double take with her Halloween outfits.
For Oct. 31, Monáe morphed into E.T. from the iconic Steven Spielberg movie E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
In the weeks leading up to the reveal, Monaé both shared that there is an anonymous benefactor who funds the creation of her costumes, and that her 2024 look was two years in the making.
"I love transforming," the star, who uses she/her, they/them pronouns, told PEOPLE, adding. "It brings me joy."
