Why Doctor Strange almost cost Scott Derrickson everything

Auditioning to direct or star in the latest blockbuster takes more than just a simple interview.

Some talent risk everything, and put it all on the line in the slim chance they'll be in the running to direct the next big thing... or in this case, the film adaptation of the 1960's comic Doctor Strange.

Horror film aficionado Scott Derrickson did just that, and has revealed the extreme lengths he went to in order to score the directing job on the Marvel epic in an exclusive interview with Be.

“I spent an extreme amount of money in creating my visual presentation to get this job,” the director tells Be.

Tilda offers: “Did you make a levitation cloak?”

“Oh, I did much more than that,” Scott says, so Tilda asks, “Did you go in costume?”

To which Scott adds, “I spent an obnoxious amount of my own money."

Although Scott wouldn't reveal exactly how much he put on the line, we're betting he went all out.

The Sinister director continues: “I did storyboards - I hired professional storyboard artists.

“I pre-wrote a 12-page scene in the movie and illustrated it completely and created my own concept art.

“[Then] I went in and did a 90-minute presentation that cost me a LOT of money.”

But the risk paid off.

Scott, 50, eventually landed the role in 2014, and announced it by tweeting out excitedly: "My next movie will be STRANGE."

“The great thing was that when I got the job they had to buy it all off me,” he adds to Be. “Because one of the set pieces in the middle of the movie was one of the scenes that I wrote and they had to own everything, because a lot of it ended up being in the movie we made.

“So I got a lot of that money back. But I was committed, I was going to out-spend every competing director. “

Tilda adds: “That’s just being a gambler, which is what we all are.”

To which Scott explains: “I just knew that to get the job I had to show that I wanted it more than anyone.”
