Sarah Michelle Gellar says she wasn't shading Jennifer Love Hewitt in 'deer in the headlights' red carpet clip
"Excited to see so many old friends in one project but have already stupidly forgotten what NDA means," she wrote on Instagram.
Sarah Michelle Gellar is clearing up some rumors about her and Jennifer Love Hewitt.
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer star has addressed a viral clip of what some viewers interpreted as her shading her former I Know What You Did Last Summer costar. When Extra asked Gellar whether Hewitt would return for next year's IKWYDLS movie in an interview at the red carpet premiere of Dexter: Original Sin on Wednesday, Gellar looked stunned giving her simple response, "I have nothing to do with that."
Hewitt confirmed her return to the franchise in an Instagram post on Friday — but Gellar said she wasn't sure what she was allowed to talk about at the Dexter premiere two days before.
Gellar explained the situation in an Instagram story on Friday. "Aspiring actors please note: This 'deer in the headlights' reaction is perfect for when you are excited to see so many old friends in one project but have already stupidly forgotten what NDA means once this month," she wrote in a caption atop a photo from the new I Know What You Did Last Summer set.
That nondisclosure agreement slipup occurred when she posted a photo from that same set with the jokey caption, "Scooby Doo 3 coming soon…." in reference to the other film franchise she starred in with her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr.

Prinze is also returning for the forthcoming Summer film, but Gellar's post came a little too soon before the official announcement of its production was ready. "I found out that they hadn't posted any pictures from the set yet — hadn't announced they started filming," she explained recently on Live With Kelly and Mark,. "That was an 'Oops! My bad!'"
Commenting on the carelessness of her mistake, Gellar joked, "You would think that being in my position, I know what rules are on sets when they say closed sets, you know? So my husband's starring in the movie, and it was Thanksgiving, so I took our kids to Australia to go out there and visit him. And I was sitting on set and I was like, 'Oh, what a great picture,' and then I posted it."
The actress spilled more information on her recent trip to Australia on Late Night With Seth Meyers this week — including an anecdote about obsessively researching detachable penis spiders that populate the country. "Of course, once I saw this, I had to go on a deep dive," Gellar said. "Like, how does that work? Basically, it puts its penis into the mate. I have never said [the word penis] this many times on television. I feel like something bad is about to happen."
