Sade Shares Rare Family Footage of Her and Trans Son Izaak in ‘Young Lion’ Music Video — Watch!
"Young Lion," which was released in October, is the singer's first new music in six years
Sade's new music video offers fans a rare glimpse into her family life.
On Friday, Nov. 22, the "Smooth Operator" singer, 65, shared the visual for "Young Lion," her first song in six years and a touching apology to her transgender son, Izaak Adu, which features rare family footage of the pair.
The four-minute-long video, which opens on a sprawling road, features footage of Sade and her son over the years. Throughout the visual, there are clips spanning nearly three decades, including moments where the "No Ordinary Love" musician held him as a baby and when they traveled by car together. At the end of the video, a moment where Sade embraces her young son on the beach pans to a more recent clip where an older Adu is running toward her on the beach.
"Young man/ It's been so heavy for you/ You must have felt so alone," the "By Your Side" musician sings to her 28-year-old son over the clip. "The anguish and pain/ I should've known/ With such a heavy burden/ You had to carry all on your own."

In October, Sade shared "Young Lion," which is featured on AIDS non-profit Red Hot's Transa, a compilation bringing awareness to the transgender community written by both allies and LGBTQ+ talent, released on Friday, Nov. 22.
In an October interview with Rolling Stone, Adu recalled his reaction to hearing the song.
“Though there was nothing I needed to forgive her for, the lyrics ‘Forgive me, son, I should have known,’ struck a chord," he said. "My mum never tried to oppress the boy; I silently always knew I was. She always let me be me.”

The song was inspired by a "personal" letter Sade gave Adu on his 21st birthday.
“I think that a song where a parent apologizes for misunderstanding their child can hold immense significance for the trans community,” Adu said. “This song may serve as a beacon of hope and a reminder that parents can learn, grow and ultimately accept their children for who they truly are.
He added: "I hope it can offer a sense of comfort, validation and a feeling of being seen and understood."
The full compilation of Transa is separated into themed "chapters" and features music from André 3000, Sam Smith, Sharon Van Etten, Faye Webster, Clairo, Julien Baker and more.
