UPDATED with more details: In what came as no surprise, filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo stepped onstage at San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H to confirm that they’re returning to helm the next Avengers movies: a new title Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars that will hit theaters in 2026 and 2027, respectively.

Anthony Russo said that they have to make a first movie before Secret Wars: Avengers: Doomsday. In order to pull this off, they needed to find the right actor to play Dr. Doom. An actor, clad as the famed Marvel villain stepped on stage of Hall H and unmasked himself as none other than Robert Downey Jr.

It was also announced that the Fantastic Four will appear in both Avengers movies, with Doomsday set to premiere in May 2026 and Secret Wars in May 2027.

The next two Avengers movies were last announced at Comic-Con 2022 to wrap up phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Avengers: The Kang Dynasty (May 1, 2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (May 7, 2027). Clearly Kang Dynasty is not longer in the wake of that pic’s star Jonathan Majors, who played new mega villain Kang the Conqueror was found guilty of reckless assault and harassment in his domestic violence trial by a six-person NYC jury. Marvel fired the actor thereafter.

The Russos told us back at The Gray Man premiere in July 2022 that “The one series that we adored growing up was Secret Wars. It’s incredibly ambitious. It would be bigger than Infinity War and Endgame. But it’s a massive undertaking.”

The Russos delivered four of the biggest films in Marvel history: Avengers: Endgame ($2.79 billion, the second highest grossing movie of all-time), Avengers: Infinity War ($2.05 billion), Captain America: Civil War ($1.15B) and Captain America: Winter Solider ($714.4M).
