Presenting: The 411 on Dua Lipa's Ex Boyfriend, Romain Gavras
Dua Lipa is quite literally one of the most successful pop stars in the world, so of course the subject of her love life is regularly discussed. I mean, not only has the singer been linked to Anwar Hadid but she's been the subject of dating rumors from musician Jack Harlow to comedian Trevor Noah. But it seems as though Dua found a new special someone in 2023. Enter: Filmmaker Romain Gavras.
Before we get into all the deets surrounding Dua and Romain's 'ship, I want to take you back to a truly tender interview the singer had with Elle UK, during which she shared the reason behind why she's such a romantic: “I’m such a firm believer in love. I blame my parents for that because they have a really good relationship and I think they’ve set my standards high,” she gushed at the time. “Life is too not short not to say ‘I love you.’ As much as I tell myself not to rush into things or be careful to say ‘I love you’ too fast without really knowing if there’s any substance in the relationship, I think it’s really important to go with your gut.”
In December 2023, reports that Dua and Romain had gone their separate ways surfaced after they shared a "summer of love" together. With that in mind, let's get to know Dua's alleged ex-boyfriend Romain a little better.
Romain is a filmmaker
Oh, and the profession seems to run in his family since, according to the Onassis Foundation, Romain is the son of Greek-French film director Costa Gavras. Even so, the creative has def carved a path for himself and most recently directed the Netflix action-thriller Athena.
Romain has also dabbled in directing music videos, including M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls” and Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Frank Ocean’s “No Church in the Wild.” He's also shot tons of ad campaigns such as Louis Vuitton’s “Coeur Battant,” Dior’s “J'adore: The New Absolu,” and Powerade’s “The Corner,” per his IMDb page.
He's been nominated for *multiple* awards
Back in 2017, Romain was nominated for Best Music Video for Jamie XX’s “Gosh (Version 2),” which is already a pretty incredible feat in and of itself. But it was far from the first time the director has been acknowledged by ~the academy~. In 2013, he was nominated twice (!!) for a Grammy in the Best Short Form Music Video category for Jay-Z and Kanye’s “No Church in the Wild” and M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls,” and the year prior he actually took home an MTV Video Music Award for the latter.
He and Dua were spotted together quite a bit 👀
Case in point? On February 28, Dua was spotted leaving the Saint Laurent Paris Fashion Week show with Romain in tow, and for all the juicy pics from that sighting head right on over here. And a few days earlier, the duo was spotted leaving a BAFTA's afterparty together. At the time, an insider dished to The Sun the two had been “quietly getting to know each other for months.”
“They have been enjoying spending time together. The pair met each other’s close circles over the festive period and have lots in common,” the source continued before adding, “Dua knows how important it is to find someone who understands her industry. She feels Romain totally gets it. They’re both really creative people.” In-ter-est-ing!!!
He low-key used to date Rita Ora
Yep, apparently Romain and Rita were together for six months before the ultimately split for good in March 2021, according to the Daily Mail. But here's a pic of them back in November 2020 doing what we were all were during those truly dark times: going on masked walks.
“Rita and Romain split up months ago because of difficulties with their respective work commitments. They remain close friends,” said a spokesperson for Romain at the time of the breakup. A source close to Rita also added, “Rita and Romain tried to make it work but they both agreed it wasn’t meant to be. They remain close but it was simply impossible to maintain a relationship where they barely saw each other.”
Romain and Dua made their red carpet debut at Cannes!!!
Could these two be any more iconic? Answer: no. Dua and her ex-man legit broke the internet after the two were photographed in their first public appearance together on the red carpet for the film Omar La Fraise (The King of Algiers) at the Palais des Festivals. Witness all of their cuteness here:
^ I mean, if someone told me that this was the poster for one of the movies at Cannes, I would believe them.
And because the singer knows how to give the people what they want, she also took to Instagram to make it ~IG official~, captioning a set of now-deleted pics that featured Romain, “Last night in Cannes with my sweetheart.”
The pair reportedly split "before things turned sour"
A December 2023 report from The Sun revealed that Dua and Romain called it quits after sharing a "summer of love" together. According to an anonymous source, Dua "has blinkers on when it comes to her career and the pair ended the relationship before things turned sour."
The report dishes that Dua is concentrating on her music while working on her third album, Radical Optimism. "Romain considered Dua to be a workaholic but she doesn’t plan on slowing down for anything or anyone," the insider added.
