Rugrats is returning to the big screen.

A live-action, CGI hybrid movie based on the 1990s Nickelodeon TV series is in development by Paramount Pictures, PEOPLE confirms. Director Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect) is attached.

The series' signature characters Tommy Pickles, Chuckie Finster and Phil and Lil DeVille will appear as animated character in the upcoming film, which otherwise will be filmed in live-action, according to Variety, which likened the film to Sonic the Hedgehog in how it will incorporate its characters into the world.

Saturday Night Live comedian Mikey Day cowrote the movie's script with Streeter Seidell, a screenwriter and comedian who has worked at SNL since 2014.

Rugrats co-creators Arlene Klasky and Gábor Csupó are producing the new movie along with Karen Rosenfelt.

Rugrats ran for nine seasons on Nickelodeon; the animated series debuted 1991 and aired its series finale in 2002.

The series follows a group of toddlers, most often led by Tommy Pickles (voiced by E.G. Daily in the original series), their misadventures and the lives of their parents. In addition to the original series, Nickelodeon also released three animated Rugrats movies in theaters between 1998 and 2003 and created a sequel series titled All Grown Up!, which followed the same characters as tweens and teens between 2003 and 2008.

The series also received an animated reboot on Paramount+ in 2021. Paramount Pictures initially announced it intended to make a feature-length Rugrats movie at the same time it announced the rebooted animated series in 2018, Deadline reported at the time.

Director Moore, 53, is best known for his work on 2012's original Pitch Perfect. He also directed Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's 2015 comedy Sisters and most recently collaborated with Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel on the 2022 movie Shotgun Wedding.
