Riley Keough recalls finding mom Lisa Marie Presley crying on the floor listening to Elvis Presley's music

"Her grief was very — I don't think she knew how to process it," Keough says of her mother coping with her father's death, which occurred in August 1977 when Lisa Marie was 9.

Lisa Marie Presley continued to grieve the loss of her father, music legend Elvis Presley, years later, Daisy Jones & the Six star Riley Keough told Oprah Winfrey about her mother in a new special.

"Her grief was very — I don't think she knew how to process it," Keough, 35, said to Winfrey in a clip from the upcoming An Oprah Special: The Presleys — Elvis, Lisa Marie and Riley. Lisa Marie was 9 when her father's death occurred in August 1977.

"It was a very private thing for her," Keough added. "She would listen to his music alone, if she was drunk, and cry."

When Winfrey asked Keough if she saw her mother do that many times over the years, the actress replied, "Yes, I would walk in her room and she had speakers — because this was back in the day — and she would be sitting on the floor crying and she'd listen to her dad's music."

In the special, Winfrey travels to the historic Graceland Mansion in Memphis, Tenn., to sit down with Keough, Elvis’s first-born grandchild, in her first in-depth interview since her mother died unexpectedly in 2023 at 54. Prior to her death, Lisa Marie recorded hours of stories from her life for a memoir, From Here to the Great Unknown, which Keough finished co-writing and which will be on sale Oct. 8.

The interview heavily discusses the new memoir, which details "Lisa Marie’s idyllic but wild childhood years with Elvis, Elvis’ shocking death, her challenging teen years in the wake of her father’s death, her marriages, her devotion to her children and her agonizing descent into addiction," according to the special's description. The conversation between Keough and Winfrey will also include "never-before-seen family photos and home videos, as well as selections of Lisa Marie’s personal audio recordings, including memories of her father."

Keough first revealed her plans to publish her mother's posthumous memoir, which Lisa Marie had asked her daughter to help finish prior to her death, in January. The project was then put off, but Presley's passing spurred Keough to revisit the project.

"Few people had the opportunity to know who my mom really was, other than being Elvis's daughter," Keough said in a statement about the book at the time. "I was lucky to have had that opportunity and working on preparing her autobiography for publication has been a privilege, albeit a bittersweet one."

She added, "I'm so excited to share my mom now, at her most vulnerable and most honest, and in doing so, I do hope that readers come to love my mom as much as I did."
