Ricky Gervais Has Humbling Advice for New Golden Globes Host Nikki Glaser
Comedian Nikki Glaser has revealed the advice she has received from past Golden Globe Awards hosts before she takes that stage for the first time on Sunday, Jan. 5. And the words of wisdom from five-time host Ricky Gervais are particularly humbling.
Glaser told CBS Mornings that she reached out to Gervais and he got back to her “right away” to offer up his services.
“Be yourself,” Glaser says Gervais told her. “You’re not one of them. Don’t try to walk out there acting like you’re an A-lister. Just because you’re invited—you wouldn’t be if you weren’t the host.”
Glaser called that a “very valid point,” but it does ignore the fact that she is also nominated at the Globes for her latest HBO stand-up special Someday You’ll Die and is a frontrunner to win against Seth Meyers, Adam Sandler, Ali Wong, Jamie Foxx, and Ramy Youssef.
She is also coming off a huge year that included her knock-out set at Netflix’s roast of Tom Brady.
Past hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, meanwhile, came through with more practical advice for Glaser: “The room is super noisy, they’re all talking, don’t try to quiet them down because the audience at home can’t hear them.”
Glaser did not mention seeking any tips from last year’s Golden Globes host Jo Koy, who notoriously bombed harder than any awards show host in recent memory.
