Radio host Dave Hughes reveals the gory details about his horror surfing accident

"I didn't listen properly."

Dave 'Hughesy' Hughes has updated fans on his New Year's Eve surfing accident that left him with a dislocated shoulder and significant nerve damage. In his first radio show back in 2024, Hughesy opened up on Hughesy, Ed & Erin about the horrific dislocation that happened while he was trying to learn how to surf.

Hughesy went to hospital following the accident, with the comedian revealing on Instagram at the time that the dislocation resulted in nerve damage and the "worst pain" of his life which lifeguards treated with an emergency painkiller.

"Had my least sober NYE in 30+ years. Green whistle came after two hours of worst pain of my life, plus morphine and the rest of them," he captioned the gallery of images.

"Shoulder dislocation whilst surfing. ‘9 out of 10 level nerve damage.’ Shout out to wife, @surfersparadiseslsc, and GC medical professionals for their much-needed help! Will be in a sling for a while, not sure when my next right-handed high five will be."

On this morning's radio show, Hughesy explained the surfboard smashed into his back and dislocated his shoulder, leaving him in trouble in the surf.

"The boards are too big and I didn't listen properly when the instructor said 'If you're going to fall off your board, fall off backwards,'" Hughesy said.

Hughesy then explained he fell forwards off the board, with the board then smashing into him on the next wave.

Hughesy then said the instructor started laughing before Hughesy let him know he was really in pain.

"Have a look at my shoulder, it's below my ballsack," Hughesy quipped.

He then said he was on the beach for an hour "crying" as he waited for the ambulance to show up, with Erin and Ed joking that Hughesy isn't that "big" in Queensland to get priority service.
