'It's payback': Princess Beatrice accused of upstaging Harry and Meghan with engagement news

It’s one of the happiest days of Princess Beatrice’s life, with the royal announcing her engagement to property tycoon Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, however she’s now being accused of upstaging Prince Harry and Meghan Markle with her news, as the Sussexes are currently on an official tour of South Africa.

In fact, some Twitter users have even gone so far as to say Beatrice’s timing is ‘payback’ after it was widely reported that the Duchess of Sussex announced her pregnancy back in October, at Princess Eugenie’s wedding to Jack Brooksbank.

“Convenient for Beatrice to announce her engagement while Marry and Meghan are on tour. Great timing I must say,” on person Tweeted.

A fan wrote: “Payback for what she did at Eugenie's wedding!” while another person mentioned the news came just one day after Archie’s ‘reveal’.

The 31-year-old daughter of Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew got engaged to her boyfriend of 11 months while the couple recently holidayed in Italy. They are expected to marry in 2020.

Who is Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi?

Edo, as he’s known to his friends, is a property developer. The 36-year-old works as the CEO of Banda Property.

He’s the son of Count Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi and Nikki Shale and has a two year-old son Christopher ‘Wolfie’ Woolf from his previous marriage with Chinese-American architect Dara Huang.

Taking to her Twitter, Princess Beatrice wrote: “I’m so excited to announce my engagement to Edo”.

Princess Eugenie paid tribute to her only sister on Instagram, gushing over their engagement news.

“Beabea - wow! I'm so happy for you my dearest big sissy and dear Edo,” she captioned the snaps.

Proud parents, the Duke and Duchess of York also shared their delight at their eldest daughter’s engagement.

“We are thrilled that Beatrice and Edoardo have got engaged, having watched their relationship develop with pride,” they said in a statement.

Beatrice and Edo made their first official public appearance at a National Portrait Gallery gala in March, which the Duchess of Cambridge also attended.

The couple also joined Beatrice’s parents Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Beatrice had been single since splitting from her American boyfriend Dave Clark in 2016 after a decade together. Clark married Lynn Anderson, a New York advertising executive, in a lavish wedding ceremony in Puglia, Italy in July 2018.
