Yahoo Lifestyle Prince Harry delivers emotional speech about "continuing Diana's legacy" at charity event
Prince Harry paid tribute to his mother, the late Princess Diana, during an emotional appearance at a charity event last night.
The 40-year-old was attending an event for the Halo Trust, where he delivered an eight-minute speech. The charity received widespread recognition in 1997 when Princess Diana was photographed walking through an active minefield in Angola.
The Duke of Sussex, who was enthusiastically greeted with applause, said working with the Halo Trust meant "a great deal" to his late mother.
"Carrying on her legacy is a responsibility that I take incredibly seriously," he told the crowds.
"And I think we all know how much she would want us to finish this particular job. We are all here because we are a band of true believers, fighting for a mine free world."
The prince then went on to recall how he followed in Diana’s footsteps in 2019, when he too visited Angola.
Looking back five years later, Harry said how in that time he had welcomed a second child, daughter Lilibet, in 2021.
"[Diana] would have been horrified to know that anyone's children or grandchildren live in a world still infested with mines," he continued. "Tomorrow let's wake up and get back to work, let's renew our commitments and let's finish the job for all our sakes.
"So we too can look back in awe and relief and so those who started this recovery and regeneration many years ago can rest knowing we really did finish the job."
Harry’s appearance at the Halo Trust’s event is part of a series of events and talks he is attending over the next few days. Earlier, the duke appeared on stage at the Concordia Annual Summit to discuss mental health and climate change in support of the Diana Award, an event given in his mother’s memory.
He is also due to be back in London on 30 September to attend the Wellchild Awards.
Neither the Duchess of Sussex, nor Harry’s two children, will be in attendance.
