Prince Charles breaks royal protocol on Trump's visit

It’s one of the most historic events on the royal calendar this year, but it seems Prince Charles broke protocol at the first hurdle during President Trump’s official state visit.

Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, arrived in style at Buckingham Palace in a military helicopter, just hours after Melania’s ‘cabin crew’ inspired outfit caused a stir when she disembarked their plane at Stansted Airport.

The Trumps are on a three day visit to the UK, which includes the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

Despite being at the Queen’s home, the First Lady and President Trump weren’t greeted by Her Majesty, but rather Prince Charles and Camilla were on hand to welcome the dignitaries to the palace.

It’s being seen as a breach of royal protocol by the future king, as traditionally the Queen should be the first member of the royal family to greet a President.

According to the royal family’s official website, these type of state visits play ‘an integral role in strengthening Britain's relationships with countries across the world’.

“Firstly, the Queen and other Members of the Royal Family greet visitors with a ceremonial welcome, which usually takes place on Horse Guards Parade,” the website states.

However, the Queen was waiting on the steps of Buckingham Palace, after Prince Charles had greeted Donald and Melania Trump at their helicopter.

Back in 2009, the Queen and Prince Philip were the first people to welcome President Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, to Buckingham Palace.

And in 2001, the Monarch and the Duke of Edinburgh were also the first members of the royal family to greet President George W. Bush and his wife Laura to their residence.

While it’s a break in royal protocol, it could also be seen as a sign that the Queen is handing over some of her biggest duties to her eldest son, who will become king one day.

It seems Trump didn’t mind one bit that the Monarch decided not to cross the lawn and greet him off his helicopter, as he later took to Twitter to express his joy at the welcome he received.

“London part of trip is going really well. The Queen and the entire Royal family have been fantastic. The relationship with the United Kingdom is very strong,” he wrote.

“Tremendous crowds of well wishers and people that love our Country. Haven’t seen any protests yet, but I’m sure the Fake News will be working hard to find them. Great love all around. Also, big Trade Deal is possible once U.K. gets rid of the shackles. Already starting to talk!”

Later in the evening, Donald and Melania attended a State Banquet at the Palace.

Melania, Her Majesty, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duchess of Cambridge, all colour co-ordinated for the elegant evening affair, and dressed in all white.

Looking very stately, Melania opted for a simple Dior gown teamed with elbow-length gloves and was joined by Ivanka Trump, her husband Jared Kushner, Donald Trump Jr, Eric Trump and his wife Lara, and Tiffany Trump.

There were also 16 members of the royal family present among the 170 guests in the Buckingham Palace Ballroom, including Prince Charles, Camilla, Prince William and Kate Middleton.
