President Joe Biden Confirms He and the First Lady Will Attend Georgia Tribute Service for Rosalynn Carter

The Bidens will be joined by Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Douglas Emhoff

President Joe Biden, 81, and First Lady Jill Biden, 72, will be paying their respects to former First Lady Rosalynn Carter in Georgia on Nov. 28.

According to CNN, the Bidens will be among the many notable figures in Atlanta on Tuesday for a planned tribute service for Rosalynn. They will be joined by Vice President Kamala Harris, along with second gentleman Douglas Emhoff.

The planned service at Emory University's Glenn Memorial Church is one of multiple events honoring the life of Rosalynn Carter, who died on Nov. 19 at age 96.

On Monday, Nov. 27, ceremonies will begin with a wreath-laying at Georgia Southwestern State University's Rosalynn Carter Health and Human Sciences Complex. The former first lady will then be taken to the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, where members of the public are invited to pay respects while she lies in repose from 6 to 10 p.m. local time.

On Tuesday, the Carter motorcade will move to Glenn Memorial Church, and on Wednesday, Nov. 28, a formal funeral service for family and friends will take place at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains.

Married to the 39th president, Jimmy Carter, for 77 years, the former first lady broke barriers with her advocacy for mental health and human rights. As first lady, she served as the honorary chair of the President’s Commission on Mental Health, and helped usher through the 1980 passage of the Mental Health Systems Act.

After leaving the White House in 1981, the Carters started The Carter Center, a health and human rights organization aimed at alleviating human suffering around the globe. Rosalynn chaired the center’s Mental Health Task Force. She also served as a member of the Carter Center Board of Trustees.

“Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished. She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me,” Jimmy said in a statement following the announcement of her death.

The couple's son, Chip Carter, added in his own statement: “Besides being a loving mother and extraordinary First Lady, my mother was a great humanitarian in her own right. Her life of service and compassion was an example for all Americans. She will be sorely missed not only by our family but by the many people who have better mental health care and access to resources for caregiving today.”
