  • School Spirits returns with season 2 on Thursday, Jan. 30, and List tells PEOPLE that “all of the questions” from season 1 will be explained “in great length” in the new installment

  • List also promises “a lot of moments” between Maddie and Milo Manheim’s Wally in the new season

While the School Spirits season 1 finale finally gave Maddie answers about her death, it presented a slew of new questions.

Peyton List, who plays Maddie, promises “those questions are answered” in season 2, which premieres Thursday, Jan. 30. “All of the questions will be explained this season in great length,” she tells PEOPLE. “At the end of the first season, questions are answered, and then there's more that comes up after, and I think that's similar with season 2. We get a huge resolution, and then we get a whole other problem.”

The trailer for season 2 suggests Mr. Martin (Josh Zuckerman) might be at the root of a lot of these problems.

“Everyone has so many questions about who this person is that they thought they knew for decades,” List says of Maddie and her ghostly group. “He has the belongings of each person from when they died, so everyone wants to know why and what exactly they might mean. And Mr. Martin and Janet, they're very intimate, so it's everyone wants to know [why]. It's a big clue that leads to everything else.”

Season 1 wrapped up with Maddie learning that Janet (Jess Gabor) ended up inhabiting her body, which means Maddie’s body is still out there in the world walking around. “Even though her physical body is out there — there's pictures — it doesn't make any sense,” she says.

Her BFF Simon (Kristian Ventura) has a particularly hard time understanding that. “We left off with Simon not believing that he's talking to Maddie. He just thinks that his friend has died or his friend is out there, and he created this fake version of her because he's slowly going insane,” List says.

She adds, “Maddie has to convince him that he has been talking to her. She has to try to get through to him that this is her consciousness and it's not just a figment of his imagination.”

At the same time, Maddie and Wally’s (Milo Manheim) relationship “really grows” in season 2, according to List. “I wasn't expecting the amount of fans of Maddie and Wally's relationship!” the Cobra Kai star admits.

The actress adds, “People that are a fan of that relationship will be really happy because there's a lot of moments between them [in season 2]. Maddie's finally able to accept the circumstances, and she's able to pay attention to this boy that's in front of her that she was ignoring for the first season. She's finally letting him in.”

Rhonda (Sarah Yarkin) doesn’t love Maddie and Wally’s relationship, though. “Because Rhonda is so alone, she has no partner, then this girl comes in and finds friendship and love so easily, these things that Rhonda's been craving,” List explains. “I think it was frustrating for her to watch.”

List calls Manheim, 23, “the best,” adding that “Milo just brings so much joy and fun and silliness to the set. He lightens everything up, and it's really fun to do scenes with him. He's always adding something in and improvving something that will get a real reaction in the scenes.”

The actress says that the cast “checks in” with each other while filming heavy scenes, and “people are still making jokes to keep it light.”

“We're always trying to keep that balance,” she adds.

As many of the teen ghosts wait to cross over after dying in the high school, List contemplates what her version of heaven looks like. “When watching The Good Place, I thought it was really funny when they're like, ‘How did we not know it was hell? There was frozen yogurt this whole time. Nobody likes frozen yogurt.’ And I was like, ‘What? I love frozen yogurt. I have a platinum card!’ ” she says. “So in my heaven there would be frozen yogurt. We all just hang out, surf, swim, eat good food. That would be the dream.”
