Peter Stefanovic gives Karl a hard time after Logies
While his brother Karl was famously dusty when fronting breakfast television after the Logies, Peter Stefanovic was remarkably fresh faced for his debut on Sky News’ First Edition, on Monday.
The ex-Weekend Today anchor did not attend Australian TV’s night of nights, but that didn’t stop him from giving his potentially bleary-eyed big brother an on-air shout out.
“It’s amazing when you don’t go to the Logies how good you feel the next morning when you’re up at work again, so bright and early,” he told the show’s audience.
“What [time] is it? I know Karl is up watching at the moment, so good morning to you, bro.”
Karl’s big night
While it’s likely Karl was up in support of his sibling’s first day on the job, last night he spoke with excitement about enjoying his first post-Logies sleep-in in more than a decade.
“I don’t have to prepare for a show the next morning… so watch out,” he told the network on the red carpet.
Back in 2009, Karl took to the Today desk while admittedly still drunk, and he’s yet to live it down.
The 44-year-old, who was infamously dumped from the Channel Nine at the end of last year, was the butt of a number of jokes throughout Sunday’s awards night.
Tom Gleeson, who took home the top gong, ripped into the one-time Gold Logie winner and took aim at both his public sacking and high-profile wedding to Jasmine Yarborough.
"I think the reason they (the Logies) ask you to do the opening is because Channel Nine has run out of stars," he began.
"They don't have any left. They have a new rule on breakfast TV, if you are too entertaining they fire you. Am I right Karl. Is Karl here. Where is Karl?”
Tom went on to reference the network’s runaway reality hit, Married At First Sight and how the over the top program compared to Karl’s own Mexican nuptials.
"Congratulations to Married At First Sight by the way for their monster ratings. Give them a huge round of applause," Tom said.
"Channel Nine were happy to cash in on your ratings by showing off your tacky weddings and fired Karl Stefanovic for having one!"
Pete’s breakfast debut
Pete meanwhile, abstained from the festivities despite the fact his wife Sylvia Jeffreys was there hosting Nine’s red carpet coverage.
The 37-year-old has been lying low since he parted ways with Nine in December following his Ubergate scandal.
After landing the new gig on Sky in March, he reflected on his family’s tumultuous past year, adding life post-scandal had been ‘tough’.
“It did have its challenges, particularly because I’m inherently quite a shy person so, when there’s stuff going on out there, it’s embarrassing and I felt responsible and ashamed for a lot of what happened,” he told News Corp.
“Not just because of the damage I might have caused to my employer, but also to my family as well.”
After news of Peter’s termination came to light, Karl was axed from his 14-year tenure as Today’s frontman while Sylvia was replaced by Tom Steinfort as the show’s newsreader and now reports for A Current Affair.
