Pete Davidson's Prank on His Mom Backfired After Asking for Jon Hamm's Help

Pete Davidson would like to help his mom Amy find someone special, but he recognizes that he has to be “careful” when it comes to the way he goes about the task after a prank he once pulled backfired.

The 31-year-old comedian shared the story during a recent appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show. The program posted a clip from his conversation with host and actress Drew Barrymore on Instagram on Friday, Jan. 31.

“I heard that you would like for your mom to try dating. Is this true?” Barrymore asked in an extended version of the conversation uploaded to her show’s website.

“Yeah,” Davidson confirmed, adding that he was initially “nervous” by the idea before changing his mind. He then revealed that his mom has not entered the dating pool since the death of his father. Scott, a New York City fireman, died while responding to the attacks on the Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001.

“It’s been, like, 22, 23 years since my dad passed,” Davidson said. “She’s never dated. And when I asked her, she was like, ‘That’s my guy.’ And that’s so sad.”

But the Bodies Bodies Bodies actor suspects that might have changed. “I think she’d like to have a partner, and just someone to hang out with,” he said before jokingly adding, “so I don’t have to do it so much.”

When Barrymore later asked how they could “find a date” for Amy, the Saturday Night Live alum admitted to the prank he once pulled during his time on the sketch comedy show.

“I gotta be careful,” Davidson explained, "‘cause a couple years ago, you know the lovely Jon Hamm?” Once Barrymore confirmed that she was familiar with the Mad Men star, Davidson continued his story. “My mom has a huge crush on him, and he was single at the time. And I know him, because he comes to SNL all the time.”

Davidson recalled suggesting to Hamm that it would be “really funny” if the actor was “extra nice” to Amy.

“Did he give her false hope?” Barrymore asked.

Davidson nodded and laughed in response. “He was like—because he’s so hot and charming,” Davidson said. "And he’s a nice guy in general. He would have been nice anyway. And he’s always nice to her when he sees her now.”

It fell on Davidson to break the news to his mother. “I had to tell her,” he said, adding that now he has "to be careful how I do it” if he tries to set his mom up with anyone.
