'The Penguin' Season 2–Will Gotham’s Kingpin Waddle Back for More?

With audiences raving about HBO's The Penguin, many fans have been wondering whether the crime drama might return for another season. While traditionally a show tends to see a drop-off in viewership during its weekly release, The Batman-spin-off series is bucking the trend. Combined with it's high scores on sites like IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes, it seems that audiences would be very happy with another season of The Penguin.

The series has generated significant buzz on social media, with fans praising Colin Farrell's gripping performance and the gritty portrayal of Gotham's underworld. Given its success in keeping viewers engaged and its strong critical reception, there’s plenty of potential for more stories to be told in the dark, chaotic world of The Penguin.

Has The Penguin been renewed?

As of yet, there is no word yet on a Season 2 renewal for the show. It's still unknown if HBO will re-visit the world of Matt Reeves and The Batman, though showrunner Lauren LeFranc recently hinted that there is more story to explore in an interview with ScreenRant.

Would Colin Farrell return for The Penguin Season 2?

Likely one of the biggest obstacles to a second season for The Penguin would be convincing Colin Farrell to don the heavy prosthetics again. In an interview with Total Film magazine, Farrell said he wasn't sure if he wanted to do it all over again. "It got me on a little bit," the actor said. "When I was finished I was like, 'I never want to that [expletive] suit and that [expletive] head on again'," he added.

That doesn't mean that Farrell wouldn't end up playing the role again, given some time away. "Maybe in a year I would," he said. But for now, it does not seem like the Irish actor is rushing to return to being Oz Cobb.

Could The Penguin become an anthology?

One option the show could take, should Farrell choose not to return, is to use a method various successful shows of the past 10 years have tried: Become an anthology. HBO shows such as The White Lotus and True Detective have all had success as anthology shows. The DC world is filled with various supervillains who HBO could choose to lead a second season of The Penguin (though likely the show would need to be re-named). The rest of the cast could remain. The show could even decide to move Cristin Milioti into a leading role as Sofia Falcone (aka "The Hangman").

When would The Penguin Season 2 be released?

Considering it has not been released, we don't know. But our best guess is that it would take at least two years from the season finale before the show would be back on HBO. That means the earliest we would see the show return would be roughly November 2026. However, this lines up with the tentative release date of The Batman Part II starring Robert Pattison.
