Patti LaBelle Reveals Her 1 Favorite Moment With Elton John — And It’s Not What You Expect
Like Donna Summer, Patti LaBelle works hard for her money, so you better treat her right!
While reliving the past, during a whimsical game on the Sherri Shephard’s talk show, “Sherri” on Thursday, the music icon recounted memories of yesteryear, including a moment with Elton John that came with some losses and wins.
“He was my piano player,” LaBelle said, reminiscing on her time with John.
While in London, John, who went by his original name, Reginald Kenneth Dwight at the time, played for LaBelle for a year, according to the singer.
“We played cards a lot. I took all their pounds. All of their money,” she confidently confessed.
Being the skilled card player that she is, LaBelle went on to explain how she always won when she and John, along with their musical companions, would play. But, ever the gracious victor, the singer would “feed them” since they were likely down on their luck at the time.
“I made them food to take home, with my tupperware,” she recalled. “My tupperware is very important to me. I don’t give it out.”
Along with her tupperware, the “On My Own” singer proclaimed that she also doesn’t casually loan out her shopping bags. With her altruistic heart, LaBelle admits she loaned out her prized possessions — but recalls never receiving them back, an offense she didn’t take likely.
Thankfully, for John, that’s not where the story ends. Years later, he called LaBelle, inviting her to a show he was headlining — but now, of course, he was going by the name we all recognize.
“He said Patti, please come to my show tonight,” she recalled.
Her response: “Who are you opening for?”
John casually responded, “I’m Elton John now.”
Since that moment, time has passed, and the two eventually did a song together. LaBelle remembers the singer taking his rings off and placing them on the piano. Ever the maternal figure, LaBelle pointed out he left his rings on the piano, to which he responded, “That’s your tupperware.”
Though John never returned LaBelle’s tupperware, she states that “the ring is beautiful” and gave her a new attitude.
