Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer suffer awkward BAFTAs fail: 'So sorry'

The actors were left embarrassed by the blunder, but fans loved it.

Australian stars of Colin From Accounts and real-life couple Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer left the BAFTA 2023 TV Awards audience in stitches earlier this week when presenting the award for Best International series.

The stars provided a lot of entertainment as they revealed the winner was Netflix's Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, only to realise there was no one to accept the award.

"Although we’re here presenting the award for [Best] International, it’s never been more important to support local content. British stories made by British people," Patrick told the audience, with Harriet adding, "Anyway, here’s six times in the last year that you didn’t do that, and you bloody loved it."

When they announced Dahmer as the winner and awkwardly waited for the team behind the show to accept their award.

"Is there a monster in the house?” Patrick asked the crowd before making reference to Jeffrey Dahmer, “No? Wheel on a 44-gallon drum, or …?

Harriet then asked Patrick who he'd like to thank for the win as they improvised what to do.

"I guess it all started in the theatre for me," he jokingly said, adding, "I guess we’ll accept this award on behalf of that team, because it was pretty bloody good, I liked it."

Harriet then read the autocue, which revealed what she was meant to do, "Sh*t, it just said ‘read envelope'."

"Sorry. So sorry... OK: Unfortunately – no sh*t – they’re unable to be here this evening, so we’ll make sure they get this. Because we are tight with them," she added sheepishly.

"We'll probably not see you again," Patrick added to the audience as they made their way off stage.

While it was a hilariously awkward moment for the pair, their friends and fans loved the moment, which they shared on Instagram.

"Lesson #1: how to open an envelope," Patrick wrote.

"In my defence, I thought I got all the info from the top of the piece of paper. A TINY sticker at the bottom of the page was a CLASSIC STITCH UP," Harriet added.

"Fricken hilarious! No s**t. God love you both," Rebecca Gibney commented.

"That could not have gone better. Absolutely flawless," David Collins wrote.

"Magic," Sarah Snook added.

"I’ve watched this 3 times this morning, arguably part of my new am routine," one follower joked.

"This is, and I can’t overstate this enough, the best," another added.

"This deserves its own award," a third wrote.

Many others suggested they should host the awards next year, with one user writing, "The highlight of the night! You must be next year's hosts without a doubt (and also winners of best international show, comedy and comedy performances)!"

"I want a second season of just this," another joked.
