It came as little surprise to see Da'Vine Joy Randolph take out the award, with the star saying she didn't believe she was meant to be in this career, but her mother pushed her to give acting a try when she was pursuing singing.

She also shared the story of being the only Black student in a class, thanking her former teacher who encouraged her to "forge [her] own path".

"For so long, I wanted to be different, and now I realise I just need to be myself... and I thank you for seeing me," she said through tears. "I pray to God that I get to do this more than once."

Yahoo Lifestyle's predictions

Before watching the Oscars, here were our predictions for who would win the award:

Marni—Da’Vine Joy Randolph could definitely win Best Supporting Actress, as she's had a great awards show run lately.

Lachlan - Best Supporting Actress is the most difficult category for me to predict as I adored Jodie Foster in Nyad and Da’Vine Joy Randolph in The Holdovers, but I’m crossing my fingers Danielle Brooks wins for her heartbreaking yet endearing performance in The Color Purple.

Lyndsey - I think America Ferrera should get it for her amazing Barbie speech alone.
